Greencastle wins slugfest at South

Tuesday, May 8, 2007
South Putnam junior Jon Davidson hits a grand slam to left-center field in the fourth inning of Monday night's 19-10 loss to Greencastle. Six home runs were hit in the game, with Greencastle hitting four and the Eagles hitting two.

South Putnam was definitely bat country Monday night as the Eagles and the Greencastle baseball team combined for six home runs in a high scoring affair. The Eagles dropped the game to the Tiger Cubs, 19-10.

South Putnam dug itself into a hole early in the game as Greencastle put up nine runs in the first two innings, with help from multiple errors in the field.

"Right now it's our Achilles heel," South coach Harold Campbell said about the errors. "I really believe with them right now it's mental.

"It's not like we're missing tough plays, they're missing routine plays. I told them, if you go back and look at our books, the majority of games this season we gave to the other teams," he continued.

In the first inning, Greencastle saw base runners reach on an error, a walk and three singles. Michael Richardson sent a shot to left field to score two runners. The second inning wasn't any better for the Eagles.

After the Eagles failed to score, Greencastle came out and score five in the second, behind the powerful bat of Kyle Nobles as he sent a shot to right-center field for a three-run homer.

The Eagles got things going in the third as they scored three runs and the scoring didn't stop there for South.

South scored four in the fourth, all coming from the bat of starting pitcher Jon Davidson, as he connected on a rocket shot to left-center field for a grand slam. He also added a ground-rule double in the bottom of the second inning.

"I was proud of how the guys continued once they got back into the game," GHS coach Troy Greenlee said.

Greencastle got on the board again in the fifth when Zac Remsburg destroyed a Davidson offering over the left field wall for a two-run homer. But the Eagles hung tough.

In the fifth, the Eagles again had all their runs from one bat and that bat belonged to Brad Eickhoff. Eickhoff deposited the pitch from Greencastle's Erick Burgeson over the right field wall, bringing the Eagles to within two at 12-10. But the runs would dry up for the Eagles.

Greencastle would add seven more runs and one more home run, that coming for Nobles bat again, to give him two on the night.

For Greencastle, Remsburg was 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run and two walks, Derrik Patterson was 4-for-5 with a home run and Nobles had two home runs and five RBI.

South saw Brad Eickhoff go 4-for-5 with a three-run blast in the fifth and Jon Davidson was 2-for-5 with a ground-rule double and a grand slam. Cameron Chestnut was also 2-for-4 with two

singles.

"I think every time you play, you learn some lessons and I think the lesson we learned tonight is you can't, in a game we are up that big, you can't relax and get comfortable," Greenlee said. "Because, they showed tonight they can really hit the ball. You can never relax."

"What I was pleased with is they did think they could come back and win the game and they didn't give up," Campbell said. "There'll be a day when we put it all together and that will be a fun day."

South will get another chance at Greencastle tonight as it travels to Greencastle at 4:30 p.m.
