Eagle tennis drops match to Northview

Tuesday, May 8, 2007

The South Putnam girls' tennis team took a tough defeat Monday night at home when it fell to Northview, 5-0. South's record fell to 5-3. Although losing every varsity match was a bit discouraging to coach John Briones and the Eagles, the coach stayed positive in defeat.

"They gave me 100 percent today," he said.

Briones said Northview is a tough opponent with a strong winning tradition. It has always been a challenge for his squads when they play the Knights.

"I knew they (Northview) would be tough. I didn't know they would be this tough," Briones said.

"Every time we play Northview, we're a little nervoues," he added. "They always comes ready to play."

Briones said his girls likely suffered from having not practiced on Friday due to the weather. The three days off, as opposed to the Knights, who competed in a Saturday tournament, showed in the sharpness of play.

All five losses came in straight sets. The coach particularly felt for number 2 singles, Whitney Warren. The junior had been undefeated before Monday. She is now 6-1.

"I was sad to see her suffer her firs loss," Briones said. "She's a great kid. She'll bounce back."

The Eagle s return to the courts Wednesday when they host South Vermillion at 4:30 p.m. This match is one that was delayed earlier in the year due to weather. The match actually started on the originally scheduled date, and Briones said he liked the way his girls matched up with the Wildcats.

The consistency of play from his team as well as its attitude has the coach pleased.

"Our girls are playing really consistently, really well," he said.

"One encouraging thing is our girls are hoping they draw Northview in sectional. That says a lot about these girls. I think all our varsity players think they can do better," Briones said.

In the end, a tough loss did not discourage Briones all that much. He likes his team and knows they will continued to play hard.

"I can't complain. We're at 5-3. The season's going really well."
