Cloverdale golf falls to Clay City

BORDEN -- Cloverdale golf battled a tough course Tuesday at Hoosier Hills and suffered a 147-166 loss at the hands of Clay City. The Eels' Fred Modesitt earned medalist honors with a three-under 36.

Clover coach Doug Wokoun was pleased with his team's effort even in defeat.

"Hoosier Hills is a unique setting and present an unusual set of problems. I thought we coped pretty well with most of that, but Clay City is master on its home course. The play the conditions extremely well," Wokoun said.

The Eels' mastery showed, with all four scorers shooting under 40.

For Cloverdale, Michael Glassburn lead the way with a 39. Kevin Gregg was close behind with a 40. Mike Wellington shot a 43, and Sean Rhine rounded out the scoring with a 44. Andrew Cofer and Justin Hacker each shot a 45.

"Michael and Kevin had pretty good rounds, but we need to get things to together for County on Thursday. It will be very tight, and we need our best effort," Wokoun said.

The Clovers host the Putnam County Tournament at Clover Meadows Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

On the junior varsity side, the Clovers and Eels tied at 192, but Cloverdale prevailed on the fifth score of Jake Secrest. Alex Evans paced the Clover JV, firing a 43.

Eagle golf wins three-way

CLAYTON -- Tyler Newby led South Putnam golf to victories over Owen Valley and Monrovia Monday night with his two-over-par 38. The effort earned Newby runner-up in the match, but paced a team effort which defeated the Patriots and Bulldogs by six and 26 shots, respectively. The final tally was 172-178-198.

Owen Valley's Harrison Carmichael took medalist honors.

"This one felt good," said Eagles' coach Scott Ricke. "It was a tight meet, and we were glad to come out on top. We got support from the four and five spots that we've needed and Newby led us with a strong showing."

At the four and five spots were Cory Welty's 47 and Trea Boyce's 45, respectively. Jon Weaver had the Eagles' second best night with a 42. Ben Anderson finished just outside the scoring with a 48.

"It's fun to see the guys grow and improve as the year goes on. We're really looking forward to county and conference this week. Hopefully we can maintain this momentum and confidence level throughout," said Ricke.

The Eagles return to the links tomorrow night with the Putnam County Tournament at Clover Meadows.

Cougars defeat Warriors

DANVILLE -- North Putnam golf ran its dual match record to 11-2 with a 163-185 win over Danville at Twin Bridges Monday. J.J. Burns stayed hot by firing an even-par 36 to take medalist honors.

The Warriors were lead by Brad Merkly's 45.

The other score for the Cougars were Eric Whitaker's 40, Patrick Byrd's 42 and Austin Malayer's 45. Jeremy Redman shot a 48.

The junior varsity improved to 4-2 with a 199-226 victory.

The Cougars return to action at tomorrow's County Tournament at Clover Meadows.
