Tiger Cubs finish second at sectional

Wednesday, May 16, 2007
Greencastle long jumper Bethany Schroeder finished second in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet and 3/4 inches, to advance to regional.

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs showed up ready to run and gave Brownsburg a run for its money. In the end, Greencastle came up two-and-one-half points short of a sectional title.

"We were so close," GHS coach Garry Anderson said. "We've had a good year, we're still having a good year."

With dark clouds overhead, Greencastle looked ready to bring the title home, as it grabbed wins in four events.

Laura Weatherford was huge for the Tiger Cubs as she captured the 200 meter in a time of 26.34 and also the 400 meter with a time of 59.21. Jamie Patterson was the Tigers Cubs' other individual winner, running away with the 100 meter title with a time of 12.77.

The 400 meter relay team of Megan Clodfelter, Laura English, Weatherford and Patterson dominated the event, posting a 49.52.

Anderson was happy with the performances of his upperclassmen, but made a point to acknowledge that the future looks bright for the GHS track team.

"Our freshmen have responded well this year. We've got some good performances," Anderson said.

South Putnam's Shelby Johnston delivered a win for the Eagles, as well.

Johnston took the high jump with a leap of 5-1 and finished second in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. In the 100, she clocked a time of 16.30 and in the 300, her time was 49.47.

"Shelby did well advancing to Regional in all three events she entered," South Putnam coach Cathy Herrin said. "She will have to work hard the next couple of days to prepare for next week."

North Putnam had a rough night but posted good finishes in the 400 meter relay and the high jump.

In the 400 meter relay, the Cougar team of Shannon Brock, Jasmine Minns, Kacy Wendling and Laura McGaughey placed eighth, logging a time of 55.54.

Cassandra Preecs placed seventh in the high jump, besting her seed time by two feet, with a jump of 4-10.

"I've been pleased with the girls' season," Cougar coach Kevin Lutes said. "They all did a great job in their respective events.

"I hope the girls all come back next year and work even harder. We have many freshmen so I'm excited to see how they'll use this experience to grow," he added.

Greencastle stayed close to the top of the leader board all night with good finishes in most of the events.

Clodfelter finished second in the 200 meter just behind Weatherford, with a time of 27.05. Hannah Serlin placed second in the 800 meter in 2:25.77 and third in the 1,600 meter in a time of 5:26.75.

Bethany Schroeder finished second in the long jump with a leap of 16-00.75, one inch away from first place. Caitlin Gannaway upped her shot put distance by almost two feet, placing second in the event with a throw of 38-05.

Anderson applauded the efforts of not only the top winners, but also the girls that placed well and bettered their seed efforts. He pointed out the throw of Gannaway in the shot put, Weatherford's efforts in the 200 and 400 meters and Clodfelter's portion of the 1,600 meter relay

"Megan Clodfelter, her opening leg in the 1,600, outstanding," Anderson commented. "That's a 1:01 she ran."

Some might misconstrue Greencastle's confidence as arrogance but Anderson thinks it's a byproduct of their dedication.

"They know what they can do," Anderson explained. "Because of the hard work in the weight room and the hard work on the track. They're good athletes. They're some tough girls."

Looking ahead to the regional, Anderson remains focused and hopes the team will do the same. He also likes the teams chances.

"I'm very optimistic. I hope the kids are," he said.

Several members of the Greencastle track team and South Putnam's Johnston will compete in the West Lafayette Regional Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Cloverdale junior came away with the Clovers' only win, but placed in the top eight in three events.
