Clovers lose in sectional semis
LIZTON -- For the Cloverdale softball team, Wednesday evening's sectional loss was a case of too much Lacie Woodall. The Tri-West pitcher not only threw a two-hitter while striking out 11 Clovers, she was 2-for-2 at the plate, with two doubles, three runs batted in and a run scored.
When the dust had cleared, the Bruins had plenty of offense and the Clovers didn't nearly have enough. Tri-West won, 10-0, in five innings.
The lopsided loss was a big disappointment for the Clovers, who had won their last three games of the regular season.
"We worked hard all year because this was the most important time of the year," Clover coach Greg Crum said. He said his team struggled most of the year, but had begun to come together with its late-season success.
"We didn't build upon that success tonight," he said.
The Clovers' only two hits came from the bat of Kayla Shepherd. The sophomore had two singles.
Clover pitcher Jennifer Wiley allowed 10 runs on 12 hits and one walk.
Besides Woodall's offensive performance, Tri-West also got two doubles and two RBI from Jenna Cloud. Three other Bruins had two hits each.
Cloverdale finished its season 6-19. While the season was a struggle for his team, Crum was proud of how the girls closed the regular season.
"Two weeks ago we were 3-18. It would have been easy to quit. The fact that we didn't give up says a lot about our kids and how hard we work," Crum said.
"It bodes well for the team and says something positive for them as individuals," he added.
