Boy, 12, injured in ATV wreck

Thursday, May 31, 2007

A 12-year-old Putnam County boy is recovering at home after the ATV he was riding Wednesday morning overturned, injuring his leg.

The cuts to Eric Davis' leg may have appeared more severe than they actually were, according to Patty Lehr who called 911 after being alerted to the accident on her property near Heritage Lake.

Lehr was watching from a distance as her 12-year-old son Joey and Davis were riding four-wheelers on their 2-acre property on CR 375 North at around 11:30 a.m.

A few minutes later, she was alerted to the accident by her son who said Davis was backing the four-wheeler when it flipped over on him, cutting his leg just below the knee.

Lehr, who works in the medical field, called 911 and said the boy's leg appeared to be cut to the bone. The cut extended all the way around the leg and there appeared to be significant bleeding.

Emergency personnel at the scene determined Davis should be airlifted to the hospital. A helicopter from Hendricks Regional Health in Danville responded to the scene along with medics from Operation Life, Floyd Township Fire and Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

A DNR conservation officer was also called to investigate the accident, as they are with all ATV accidents.

Lehr said Thursday that Davis was at home and was expected to make a full recovery. She said he received numerous stitches and staples in his leg but sustained no other serious injuries.

She said she did not know exactly how Davis received his injuries other than he was backing up the four-wheeler and it suddenly flipped over, landing on top of him.

He was able to get out from under it, but his leg was somehow cut in the accident.
