SPENCER -- Greencas-tle's boys' baseball team continued to dig but couldn't make it out of the early hole it found itself in, falling to Edgewood Thursday night at the Class 3A Owen Valley Sectional, 12-9.

"We got down but we didn't quit playing hard," GHS coach Troy Greenlee said. "We had a great season and we had a great effort today."

Greencastle struggled early at the plate, going three and out in the first two innings while it watched the Mustangs scored on their opening three appearances.

Greencastle fell behind early as Scott Pedersen teed off on a long bomb to left center field to put Edgewood on the board in the first.

The second inning proved to be Greencastle's shatterpoint.

The Mustangs came out and scored six runs on four hits and scored another run in the third to put the Tiger Cubs down by eight runs. That's when the Tiger Cub bats started to to come alive.

Zac Remsburg smacked a shot to left field to move Andrew Ensor, who reached on a walk to second. Michael Richardson hit a shot to center field to scored Ensor and hits from Erick Burgeson and Derrik Patterson scored Remsburg and Richardson. The Tiger Cubs bats would remain quiet for the next two innings as would the Mustangs.

The Tiger Cubs put two more runs on the board in the sixth when Jeremy Hayden opened with a shot up the middle and was followed by Kyle Nobles walk. Blake Robinson hit a double to right center and scored Hayden. Nobles would score on an Ensor hit up the middle.

But just when it looked as if Greencastle was seizing control of the game, the Mustangs rattled off four runs in the bottom of the sixth to put GHS down 12-5 going into the final inning, but Greencastle would not go without a fight.

"The satisfying thing is no matter what, these guys won't quit fighting," Greenlee said.

The Tiger Cubs connected on three straight hits as Richardson, Burgeson and Patterson reached base and would eventually score. Hayden reached on an error and would ultimately move to third on an Edgewood balk. Hayden was brought home with a Robinson hit to left field to bring the Tiger Cubs within three runs.

Ensor came to the plate with hopes of continuing the GHS rally but his hard shot was caught by a leaping Mustang shortstop to end the game and end the Tiger Cubs' season.

Greencastle said goodbye to departing seniors Richardson, Burgeson, Patterson, Remsburg and Ensor but not before Greenlee expressed their impact.

"I think this has been the best senior group I've ever had," Greenlee commented. "They've shown a lot of leadership both on and off the field. I just can't say enough about what they've done for us. I've been overly pleased with them."
