Monday, June 4, 2007

The Parkfest Summer Concert Series will kick off Tuesday with a performance by the Fret Set Band.

The Fret Set Band is a group of friends who have been playing traditional and folk music together since 1994. The group is composed of Lenora Bowlby on harmonica and lap dulcimer, Don Bowlby on mandolin and jaw harp, Rick Smock with vocals and guitar, Larry Kersey on bass, Bill Lorton on the fiddle, and Jesse Samm on the mandolin. New to the Fret Set is Bryan Lesswing, a DePauw student who contributes to the group his banjo playing abilities, and occasionally, Krystal Becker joins the band for a song or two.

The group is involved in community service, performances for schools, churches, lodges, private parties and retirement communities, as well as festivals. The Fret Set also performs at the Pioneer Barn at the Indiana State Fair.

The Parkfest Concert Series includes six weekly performances, each beginning at 7 p.m.

The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating.

In addition to the Fret Set Band, performances will be made by the classical jazz group, Convergence, the Brazil Concert Band, Tony Harmless's band performing songs from the '90s, '90s, and beyond. The final show on July 31st will feature Skunk Hour, a classic rock and country band.

All shows, except the Brazil Concert Band, will be performing in the band shell at Robe-Ann Park. The Brazil Band's tentative location is Gobin United Methodist Church. The public is invited to attend all performances, and is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.
