John "Jack" Douglas Howard

John "Jack" Douglas Howard, 72, Greencastle, formerly of College Park, Md., and Annapolis, Md., died Thursday at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis.

Born in Annapolis, he was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Annapolis, graduated from Washington College in 1956, and earned his doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1967.

A was an All-American lacrosse player at Washington College, where he was inducted to the Hall of Fame, and was inducted in 1979 into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He wa a member of Omicron Delta Kappa honor society at Washington College. He was author of "Blake's Milton" and "Infernal Poetics."

His career at the University of Maryland began in 1964 in the English Department, where he was a professor.

He married M. Susan Anthony in 1993. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Lisa Millholland, New Market, Md., Laura Howard, Gaithersburg, Md., and Alison Howard, Greencastle; sister Suzanne Nason, Aberdeen, Md.; and a grandson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis, Md.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Annapolis.

Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m Monday at Taylor Funeral Home, Annapolis, Md.
