Fred Robert Shafer

Fred Robert Shafer, 89, Mooresville, died Saturday.

Born in Jackson County, he was the son of George G. and Minnie E. (Borden) Shafer.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he retired in 1978 after 36 years at FMC Link-Belt in the tool room. He also owned Shafer Roofing Co. and farmed for many years. He was a volunteer with the Hazelwood Fire Department during the 1960s and '70s, and was a member of Hazelwood Christian Church and Bellevile Masonic Lodge 65.

He married Alice Lucille Walter on Aug. 6, 1939. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, David Shafer and wife Claudette; three daughters, Virginia Singleton and husband Bill, Fillmore, Elizabeth Brock and Mary Barker and husband Ryan; sister Carrie McVay, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five siblings, Will, Clarence, Slim, Clara and an infant Shafer and a grandson.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield.

Burial with military honors in Center Valley Cemetery, Belleville.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Tuesday.
