The heat on the Greencastle soccer field came not from the sun, but from the legs of the Tiger Cubs as they defeated Plainfield, 3-2, Thursday night.

"We haven't beat Plainfield in five years, so this is a big win for us," GHS head coach Maurice McKee said. "We still have things to work on."

Greencastle first got on the board at 28:17 in the first half when Hannah Spencer scored off a mishandled ball by Plainfield keeper Melissa Jones.

The Tiger Cubs second goal came 10 minutes later when Kate Babington scored from a considerable distance. Babington's shot made a high arc toward goal and found the goal after passing Jones' outstretched hands. GHS held to a 2-0 lead as the half ended.

In the second half, the Tiger Cubs continued its scoring ways, as Laura English found the goal on a sliding shot with 36:53 on the clock, to make it 3-0, in favor of GHS.

Greencastle's Spencer was issued a yellow-card after she collided with Plainfield's keeper three minutes later.

Plainfield started to find its pace as Colleen Diemer scored on a breakaway goal with 17:51 on the clock to pull the Quakers to within two.

Plainfield closed the gap even more when Kristen Kesterson scored with 1:58 but the Tiger Cubs held on to get the victory.

"I'm pleased with the way we played. We were passing the ball. In the first half the girls were more dominating, in the second half we got a little flat," McKee commented.

Throughout the night, the Tiger Cubs positioned themselves in places to make plays they needed to make and McKee acknowledged that fact after the contest.

"We held our positions pretty well, like I said it's early in the year so we got more things to finish out, more opportunities for them to learn a position a little bit better. Be a little bit more aware of what's going on around them and to do that it's going to take more practices and take some more work," McKee said.

Greencastle will travel to Mooresville at 10 a.m. Saturday.
