Friendship Day set Sept. 12

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Friendship Day 2007 has been set for Wednesday, Sept. 12 in Greencastle.

The annual event, which is once again being sponsored by Eitel's Flowers & Gifts, The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, Asbury Towers Retirement Community, Ivy Tech Community College, and Old National Bank, is intended to spread friendship, goodwill, community spirit and of course smiles among Putnam County citizens.

Approximately 4,000 multicolored roses will be given away by the dozen on condition: You can keep one rose for yourself, but the others have to be given away to eleven different people.

Sponsors of the event are requesting that when picking up your free roses, persons drop of a canned food item to donate to the Putnam County Emergency Food Pantry, which is located at the Putnam County Senior Center.

"This is just one more small way that we can make a difference for our neighbors." Tammy Amor, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce said.

Anyone unable to bring a canned good is still able to get a dozen roses to pass out to new friends.

The roses will available at five locations around town, beginning at 8 a.m. on Sept. 12. The locations are: Eitel's Flowers & Gifts, 17 S. Vine St.; Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, 16 S. Jackson St.; Asbury Towers, 102 W. Poplar St.; Old National Bank downtown branch, 1 N. Indiana St.; and at Ivy Community College, 1 N. Calbert Way, Ste. B.

Each year the roses disappear quickly, so the sponsors advise everyone to come early - before all the roses are gone.
