DEPAUW WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Late goal delivers Preston's first win

Jackie Smith scored on Carolyn Mueller's assist with just 9:36 remaining and lifted DePauw to a 2-1 win over visiting Wittenberg on Sunday. DePauw improved to 1-2 with head coach Gina Preston's first collegiate victory, while Wittenberg dropped to 0-1.

Wittenberg took a 1-0 lead in the first half on Boo Vernon's goal before DPU knotted the game at 1-1 on Ashely Fehr's score with an assist from Beth Seegers.

DePauw hosts Lindenwood on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES SEVENTH

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The second-ranked DePauw women's golf team shot a final round 332 to total 659 strokes and finish seventh at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational. Ferris State won the tournament with a 616 after firing a 307 Sunday. DePauw finished ahead of all of the Division III competition.

Kristen Kriegshauser paced the Tigers with a 160 and finished 22nd, while Natalie Gough was tied for 24th with a 162. Ali Murtaugh shot a 167 and tied for 40th followed by Erin Kielty in a tie for 51st with a 170.

Christine Hunt shot a 209 for 105th place. Playing as an individual, Shelby Adams shot a 191 and tied for 99th. Ferris State's Jacqueline Benscoter was the medalist with a 144.

DePauw competes in the Anderson Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

VOLLEYBALL DROPS TWO

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- DePauw dropped to 2-2 after losing both of its matches Saturday at the Capital Invitational.

The Tigers lost to Heidelberg 3-1 (21-30, 30-28, 22-30, 28-30) and then fell to 16th-ranked Capital 3-0 (26-30, 22-30, 30-32).

In the Heidelberg match, Loren Sloan led the Tigers with 13 kills, while Kim Hamer added 12. Sarah Drew recorded 43 assists, while Emily Smith paced DePauw with three service aces and 21 digs. Hamer led the team with seven blocks.

Against Capital, Hamer led the way with 15 kills, while Drew had 24 assists. Smith totaled 15 digs with Adrienne Cobb totaling four blocks and Kate Carrico adding two aces.

DePauw returns to action on Friday, September 7, when it competes in the two-day Hanover Invitational.

FIELD HOCKEY SHUT OUT

GAMBIER, Ohio -- DePauw dropped to 0-2 on the season following a 2-0 loss to DeSales in a game played at Kenyon on Saturday. DeSales improved to 1-0 in its season opener.

DeSales got on the board on Crissy Meehan's goal that was assisted by Jen Pulcini and added the second score off the stick of Ashley Sparango.

DeSales outshout the Tigers 22-13 while each team had eight penalty corners. Liz Attewell totaled 12 saves in goal for DePauw, while Molly Pope had eight for DeSales.

WOMEN'S CC WINS HOKUM KAREM

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- DePauw women's cross country totaled nine points and won the Wabash Hokum Karem by five points over runner-up Indianapolis on Saturday.

Taylor Penrod and Lauren Reich finished second at 23:02 followed by Leah Seigel and Alison Case in third at 23:29. Laura Ardington and Melissa Buckley rounded out the Tigers' scoring in fourth place in 23:38.

MEN'S CC PLACES SECOND

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- Paced by the first place finish of Nick Pucillo and Dusty Kime, DePauw placed second at the Wabash Hokum Karem with 15 points. Wabash won the meet with nine points.

Pucillo and Kime finished in 29:44 to win the men's race, while Zach Weinberg and Nathan Ellis placed sixth in 30:12. Joe Evans and Steve Clark rounded out DePauw's scorers in eighth in 30:38.

WOMEN'S SOCCER GETS FIRST WIN OVER WHEATON

WHEATON, Ill. -- Kristen McMahon's goal from Stephanie Patton's assist with just under seven minutes left provided 23rd-ranked DePauw with the winning margin in a 1-0 win over Loras on Saturday. The Tigers are 1-1 on the season, while Loras dropped to 0-2.

DePauw and Loras each totaled 13 shots in the game, while the Tigers held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. DePauw's Brooke Shipley recorded the shutout in goal after registering nine saves.

The Tigers host 25th-ranked University of Chicago at 7 p.m. today, in the first night game in the Boswell Field history.

MEN'S SOCCER ROLLS

DePauw scored six times in the first 22 minutes and went on to win its home opener by a 7-0 count over visiting Holy Cross (Ind.) on Saturday.

Jeremy Rielley scored a hat trick with three goals in the opening 18 minutes. Adam Davis, Gary Pett, Kaes Kamman and Salvatore Greco each added single goals in the win. John Cross assisted on two of the scores, while Nick Dascoli, Pett and Sean Teska finished with one assist each.

DePauw outshot the Warriors 23-2 and held a 7-0 advantage on corner kicks. John Fenley and Ted Jacobi each played one half in goal for the Tigers as DePauw picked up its second shutout in as many days.

The Tigers travel to Wittenberg on Saturday, September 8.

VOLLEYBALL OPENS 2-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- DePauw opened the 2007 season with a pair of wins at the Capital Invitational. DePauw defeated 10th-ranked Calvin 3-1 (25-30, 30-28, 30-26, 30-21) and then topped Otterbein 3-0 (30-18, 30-14, 30-24).

In the Calvin match, Kim Hamer paced the Tigers with 14 kills and 11 blocks, while Sarah Drew led the way with 30 assists. Kate Carrico led the team with 19 digs and Dana Genet recorded four service aces.

Against Otterbein, Hamer and Adrienne Cobb each had nine kills, while Hamer and Drew each totaled three service aces. Drew paced the Tigers with 20 assists and Emily Smith led with 12 digs. Katey Larson and Hamer each had four blocks in the win.
