Greencastle girls' soccer ties with Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE -- The Greencastle Lady Tiger Cubs traveled to Terre Haute South on Tuesday evening for a scorcher of a game. Both teams had to battle with each other as well as temperatures in the 90s.

The Tiger Cubs took some early shots on the Braves goal but could not connect with the net.

With 23:12 to go in the first half, the Braves took a corner kick and a trash ball was kicked into the Greencastle goal.

This score would remain until 14:54 to go in the game when Hannah Spencer dribbled through two defenders for a breakaway to score Greencastle's first goal.

This fired up the Tiger Cubs, and Laura English came back less than a minute later to score the second goal for the Tiger Cubs.

Greencastle was able to hold the Braves off until 3:45 to go in the game when they scored again. This set the final score of the evening at 2-2.

"The girls played a hard second half and showed that they did want to win the game after a slow first half," GHS coach Maurice McKee said.

The Greencastle junior varsity team played one half of a game due to injuries sustained in previous days. The JV won 5-0 with three goals from Samantha Gordon and one each by Crystal VanArsdale and Hannah Deer.

The Lady Tiger Cubs will be back in action on Saturday against another possible sectional opponent, the Northview Knights. The games will be played at Northview with the JV game at 9 a.m. and the varsity following at 10:45 p.m.
