State park road rally stops in city

A long line of cars wound through Greencastle Monday morning as they headed toward McCormick's Creek State Park on the first leg of their 195-mile journey during the Indiana State Parks road rally.

The group made a pit stop at the Marathon gas station around 11 a.m. and then headed toward Cataract Falls.

The event started at Turkey Run State Park Monday morning and included driving 103 miles with stops at 14 covered bridges, two historic mills, the Cataract General store and falls and ended at the McCormmicks Creek Inn for dinner and entertainment.

The Tuesday course covered 92 miles with five pit stops including the third longest railroad trestle in the world, the longest double span Howe truss covered bridge in the state and the largest known Sycamore tree. The group ended at Spring Mill State Park for dinner and awards Tuesday evening.

A road rally is a driving tour where people compete for points to win prizes. Packets with directions, questions and scavenger items are passed out at the beginning of the run. Points are accumulated for each scavenger hunt item collected and for each question answered correctly.

The family-oriented road rally was designed and conducted by Scenic Road Rallies LLC, Sunman, Ind. Cost for the event was $199 per person and included two nights at State Park inns, breakfast and dinner each day and an awards banquet. Other rallies will be held later in the year.
