Tigers suffer first loss of year, 35-17 to Millsaps

Monday, October 1, 2007
DePauw sophomore Bryan Mulligan (1) goes up high over Millsaps cornerback Mike Moore to haul in a pass. Mulligan led the Tigers with nine catches for 128 yards in Saturday's 35-17 loss to the Majors.

With leading rusher Jeremiah Marks out of the game for the second straight week, the DePauw Tigers dropped their first contest of the season Saturday to visiting Millsaps 35-17.

After a low-scoring first half, both teams lit up the scoreboard in the second half, combining for 42 points. Unfortunately for the Tigers, 28 of those points belonged to the Majors.

DePauw drew first blood when Brendan Smith connected on a 36-yard field goal with 14:12 in the second quarter. The field goal capped a 12 play, 57-yard drive.

The Majors had an opportunity to tie the ballgame when Will Lawrimore attempted a 36-yard field goal, but DePauw's Alex Fitch rose to the occasion and blocked the attempt as the Tiger held to its three-point lead.

Millsaps avenged the miss during its next possession at the 7:40 mark when Juan Joseph hooked up with Louis Conley for a seven-yard touchdown, putting the Majors up 7-3. Millsaps would hold that lead as the half ended.

In the second half, the Tigers came roaring out of the locker room and showed much more intensity than they had in the first half.

The defense held Millsaps to just seven yards in the opening drive of the second half and provided the pressure to help Lawrimore's 23-yard field goal slide wide left at the 10:12 mark.

After the offense went three-and-out on the next possession, the defense was unable to stop the Majors on the next drive.

Millsaps scored on a 30-yard bomb in the middle of the field to Burt Pereira. The middle of the DePauw secondary proved to be the Tigers' Achilles' heel all afternoon, providing multiple receptions for big yardage.

Millsaps scored on its first two possessions of the fourth quarter, breaking the game open with a lead of 28-3.

The Tigers would mount a charge.

DePauw took the ball for a nine-play, 71-yard possession with Alex Koors hauling in a Spud Dick three-yard touchdown pass, bringing the Tigers within 18 points.

The Majors cushioned their lead when Joseph threw his fifth touchdown of the day to Josh Maharrey, making the score 35-10.

DePauw ended the day on a positive note, driving the ball 69 yards for a Dick three-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the game to an end with the Majors winning 35-17. DePauw falls to 3-1 (2-1 SCAC).

The Tigers will be on the road against Birmingham-Southern at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
