Tiger Cub runners sweep county titles

The cross country teams of Putnam County converged on South Putnam High School for the 2007 Putnam County Meet.

At the end of the evening, Greencastle swept both county titles.

The Greencastle High School girls' cross country team placed first in the county meet Tuesday at South Putnam High School.

In the girls' meet, the Tiger Cubs totalled 31 points and were paced by the second place finish of Laura Weatherford. Sara Culler, Kaitlyn Murtagh andHannah Serlin all joined Weatherford on the All-County team, finishing fourth through sixth. Katie Trigg was the last runner to score for GHS, finishing 14th.

South Putnam finished second with 49 points. The Eagles were paced by County Champion Shannon Egold. Egold ran her home course in 21:27, besting Weatherford by 19 seconds. The time set the girls' course record.

Other scorers for the Eagles were Amanda Lund, Cassie Davis, Jessica Thompson and Meghan Canary.

Cloverdale placed third with 60 points. All-County runners Jenna Lewis and Brynlea Mattocks led the Clovers, placing third and sixth, respectively. Other scorers were Alyssa Williams, Ashley McCallie and Samantha Monnett.

North Putnam finished fourth with 79 points. Taylor Alles led the way with an eighth-place finish. Whitney High, Marcella Centeno, Hillary Salyers and Dakota Parent also scored.

The Greencastle High School boys' cross country team placed first in the county meet Tuesday at South Putnam High School.

On the boys' side, the Tiger Cubs scored 27 points, with County Champion Ben Wilson running a 17:25, more than one minute better than teammate and second-place finisher Jordan Lewis.

Austin Woodall (5th) and Ryan Gillespie (7th) also made All-County for the Cubs. Nick Stevens was the final GHS scorer.

South Putnam was a close second to the Tiger Cubs, totaling 30 points. Tyler Shoffner (3rd), Brad Eickhoff (4th) and Tyler Heavin (6th) made the All-County squad for the Eagles. South's final two scorers were Tanner Barr and Josh Olczak, who also colected top ten finishes.

Cloverdale finished third with 83 points. James Fidler was top finisher in 20th and Kyle Chambers was right behind in 21st. Other Clovers scoring were Ryan Dean, Brian Stout and Nick Monds.

North Putnam fielded an incomplete team and earned no team score. Kenny Quisenberry's ninth-place finish for the Cougars made him the only runner from neither GHS nor South to finish in the top ten. Kenny Benge, Korey Cooper and Jared Preecs also completed the tough course for North.

All seven schools of the West Central Conference will be back on the South Putnam course at 10 a.m. Saturday for the 2007 WCC Meet.
