The North Putnam FFA?has a good start on their "Can Hunger" food drive collection, and will continue that effort at Friday's home football game. FFA?members (from left) Ethan Stephenson, Dalton Harbison, Mindy Fordice, Ashlee Pinney and B.J. Moore display some of the items collected so far. For more information on their efforts, see Page 2A.

The North Putnam FFA chapter, along with 11 others from across the state, have been selected to participate in a program called "Can Hunger."

Through this program, the selected chapters have been challenged by Toyota and the National FFA to collect 1 million cans of food for donation to local food banks.

Community members attending Friday's North Putnam football game are encouraged to bring canned goods to donate. Also, area FFA chapters are invited to attend a tailgate event at that game. The admission for FFA members to enter the tailgate party will be five non-perishable food items.

Last year, North Putnam FFA filled three Toyota Tundra trucks with non-perishable food items and donated them to the food bank. The goal this year is to double the donation.

To officially kick off the collection, the FFA will host a yard sale and cookout from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at TSC in Greencastle. Items in the yard sale include a twin daybed, computer equipment, horse saddles, bread maker, luggage, shoes, stuffed animals, purses, clothing of all sizes, home décor and movies. The cookout includes hot dogs, chips, desserts and drinks. All proceeds from the event will be used to purchase canned goods for the food drive.

The food drive will conclude Oct. 22. The goal is to reach the 1 million mark prior to the start of the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis from Oct. 23-27.

Anyone wanting to make donations or learn more about Can Hunger or FFA can contact North Putnam FFA Adviser Kate Skirvin at 522-6282.
