Power pole down, traffic snarled

Crews work on a downed power line Wednesday.

A shattered telephone pole stopped traffic for hours and forced Duke Energy to shut down power on Washington Street in Greencastle Wednesday afternoon.

Greencastle police department officials say a Cash Concrete Truck struck the pole while backing out of the driveway at 629 Washington St. at 12:38 p.m., splintering the base of the pole.

Traffic was diverted between Arlington and Durham Streets, said Public Works Commissioner Paul Wilson, and police officers directed traffic at the intersection of Bloomington and Washington Streets to ease congestion.

A Duke Energy crew erected a new pole before shutting off power to minimize the time that traffic lights would be out of service, said Duke Employee Chris Lathem.
