Caution urged for Monon Bell Classic

Saturday, November 10, 2007

Motorists and pedestrians alike are both asked to be cautious in the Blackstock Stadium area today due to heightened traffic for the Monon Bell Classic.

DePauw Public Safety Supervisor Angie Nally said traffic on Jackson Street and at Hanna Street will be restricted to ease congestion and improve safety prior to and after the football game between the DePauw University Tigers and the Wabash College Little Giants.

Pedestrians are asked to cross Jackson Street at Hanna Street.

The parking lots at Blackstock will open to the public at 9 a.m., while gates to the stadium open at 11:30 a.m. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. The game is sold out, with 8,000 spectators expected. However, the HDNet national telecast will be available on Channel 3 on all local cable systems in town and on campus starting at 1 p.m.

Nally said entry to the stadium area will be at Hanna and Jackson streets. Hanna will be closed to traffic between Indiana and Jackson Streets. Traffic will exit the Blackstock area through the south parking lot drive in the curve on Jackson Street.

Overflow parking will be available in the Olin, Julian and Peeler lots.

Parking will be assigned, as it is at major events, Nally said, so arriving early does not guarantee a preferred parking spot.

Extra police coverage will be provided in the neighborhoods and parking areas on the west side of campus.

Since traffic will be routed to Jackson Street, Nally said she expects the most congestion to occur around 9 a.m. as the parking area opens, and from 4:30-5:30 p.m. as the spectators leave the area.
