John R. Torr

John R. Torr, 94, a retired Putnam County farmer, died Friday afternoon at Mill Pond Health Campus, Greencastle.

Born in Greencastle, he was the son of Frank J. and Fannie (King) Torr.

He graduated from Greencastle High School in 1931. He resided in Madison Township where he was active in both the Indiana and American Angus Beef Cattle Associations, as well as an active participant in many state, county and district cattle shows and sales. The Torr family owned an Indiana Homestead farm and was honored as the Putnam County Farm Family of the Year in 2000. He was also a member of First Christian Church, Greencastle.

He married Grace Surber on Sept. 1, 1934. She died July 1, 2002.

Surviving are a son, Kenneth Torr and wife Beverly, Greencastle; daughter Carolyn Torr Elliott and husband Russell, Greencastle; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Agnes Torr Braden, brother Franklin Torr, and infant sisters Addie and Florence.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle.

Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Indiana 4-H Foundation, the Putnam County 4-H Beef Scholarship Fund, or the Indiana M.S. Society.
