Make Saturday a special day for local families

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

The Putnam County Habitat for Humanity Inc. is still in search of volunteers and donations to make "Lunch with Santa" a special day for Putnam County families.

The event will be at the Greencastle National Guard Armory on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will feature $3 pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, pizza donated by Papa Johns and Pizza Hut, cookies and punch, and a variety of raffles.

Organizers say that Santa's Workshop will be a highlight of the event.

The shop, designed to reinforce the value of giving, will be full of inexpensive gifts for children to purchase for family members.

"Giving is the most important thing," said Putnam County Habitat for Humanity President Marj Weaver. "Getting is wonderful, but giving is better."

The organization will raffle off several event packages including:

* "Family Night Out," which will include dinner, a movie and a carwash * "Mom's Day Out," including two lunches, candles, a haircut and two gift certificates.

* "Dad's Day Out," including an oil change, lunch, a car wash and a power drill.

* "Special Nigh Out," including dinner and an overnight for two.

In addition, Habitat will raffle off a backpack full of school supplies, an acoustic guitar, a Longaberger basket and two $50 savings bonds for one boy and one girl. Admission to the benefit event is free, but organizers will be accepting at-will offerings.

Habitat officials are sending out a special thank you to Santa and Mrs. Clause for making the long trip from the North Pole to attend the Saturday's benefit lunch, but organizers say local volunteers are needed to help run the event and donations of wrapping paper are still needed.

Donations can be dropped off at Putnam County Habitat for Humanity Inc. at 620 Tennessee St., Greencastle. For volunteer information contact Tammy Folck at 522-1398 or Barb Hill at 630-5186.
