'Our Town:?Greencastle' encore showing Sunday

Saturday, December 8, 2007

WTIU will present an encore presentation of "Our Town: Greencastle" at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The program had its premiere on Dec. 2 and was repeated Dec. 4 and 6. Due to such positive audience response, the public television station has added a fourth showing of the program in one of its viewer choice slots this weekend.

"Our Town: Greencastle, Indiana" is the fourth community to be profiled in WTIU's ongoing series putting the spotlight on towns and cities in southern and central Indiana. As with the other programs, the Greencastle show started with a community meeting to get input from citizens about what makes their town special.

The program includes segments on the history, economy, folklore and people of Greencastle. Viewers will learn about the Heritage Wall, the impact of IBM leaving the community, DePauw University, the national road, the fire that burned most of the town in 1874 and the John Dillinger bank robbery in 1933.

  • My name if Dennis Matthews, the following true story is from my book on my familes history. One day in 1933, my dad Gene was walking uptown when he met a Greencastle Policeman he knew, heading away from town, he asked him why he was in such a hurry and the replied that Dillenger was robbing the bank and he was heading the other way!, the reason being is that all he had was a police issued hand gun and Dillenger and his men had tommy guns!.

  • We came to Putnam County after the Civil War from Kentucky, before that Virginia, and before that Wales which we left in 1622. My family is well known in Greencastle, my Uncle Bob was the owner of Prevos Department Store, after World War II my dad Geme was part owner of the Cox and Matthews Insurance Company, in the early 1920's my grandfather Richard Earl was part owner of the Matthews and Keller Grocery Store.

  • I never met my grandfather Richard Earl Matthews, he was born in Putnam County in 1886 to Richard and Armandia(Mindy) (McCammack) Matthews. He married Ella Elizabeth Masten in 1910, they had three boy's: Richard Dennis, Noble Eugene and Robert Earl. In the early 1920's he was part owner of the Matthews and Keller Grocery Store located at 713 Main Street. He was a member of the Fillmore Masonic Lodge and the Odd Fellows No. 45. Richard also worked at the Portland Cement Plant, he was employed as a "burner", on Sept 7, 1924 he was cleaning a coal bin along with William Price, using steam of compressed air, it stirred up the coal dust casing a terricfic explosion, Mr. Price died the next day, my grandfather died of his burns two days later, he was only 37.

  • I saw the show...It made Greencastle look great...But...isn't that what is was suppose to do? Sorry, but Greencastle is not just IBM leaving. What about Greencastle Manufacturing-Lobdell-Emery-Oxford Automotive? This loss hurt many!! Sure Depauw hires locals, but at what cost? Half of what the neighboring plants pay? Not to mention Wal-Mart employees! How many people at Lear are on the cusp of a job? If you are going to show the real Greencastle....Why not do it right?????
