Lady Eagles fall to Patriots

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

SPENCER -- South Putnam girls' basketball fell at the hands of Owen Valley Tuesday night, 79-34.

After a strong first quarter and opening of the second, the Eagles (5-4, 1-0 WCC) simply could not keep pace with the Patriots' scoring.

"We played very well for the first 10 minutes," South coach Debbie Steffy said. "We went up 13-12 early in the second quarter and then Owen Valley went on a 30-4 run.

"We could not overcome it," she continued.

South was done in by the turnover margin, giving the ball up 34 times, while the Patriots (9-1, 2-0 WIC) committed just eight turnovers.

Oceaia Boetjer led the Eagles with 13 points. Meghan Canary was close behind with 10. Bailey Birt scored eight, and Liz Mink chipped in with three.

Owen Valley's Nicole Gonser led all scorers with 26 points.

When it was all over, Steffy simply had to give credit to a strong opponent.

"OV is a very good team. They run the floor well and shoot the ball well," the coach said.

South Putnam hosts Speedway at 6 p.m. Friday in the first game of a doubleheader with the boys.
