Tiger men edge Engineers 54-53

TERRE HAUTE -- Mike Moore's three-pointer with 1:06 left broke a 48-48 tie and the Tiger men's basketball team hit three-of-four free throws in the closing minute for a 54-53 win at Rose-Hulman Monday evening. DePauw improved to 5-2, while the Engineers dropped to 3-7.

The Tigers took a 30-22 lead into the second half, but over the opening 15 minutes of the second half hit just 2-of-11 field goals and committed 11 turnovers. That allowed Rose-Hulman to take a 44-38 lead with just under seven minutes left.

DePauw's Stephen Schott ended the Tigers' 10-minute field goal drought with a bucket at the 5:11 mark. That started a 10-0 Tigers run which pushed DePauw to a 48-44 lead with two minutes remaining.

Phil Sundling closed the gap to two on a layup and, following a DePauw turnover, the Engineers knotted the score at 48-48 on Daniel Lowers' layup. Moore then knocked down the go-ahead three from the left wing and the shot clock winding down.

The Engineers turned the ball over and Steve Lemasters extended DePauw's lead to 53-48 with two free throws with 22 seconds left. Ron George's drive with 9.7 seconds remaining made it 53-50 before Lemaster knocked down a free throw with 8.2 seconds left.

Jared Moore closed the gap to one with a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds on the clock, but after each team called a timeout, DePauw was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock.

DePauw led nearly the entire first half with an eight-point advantage on two occasions including at the intermission.

Brian Oilar paced DePauw with a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. The 13 boards matched a career high. Lemasters added 10, while Schott grabbed 11 rebounds and Moore dished out eight assists. The Tigers held a 39-30 edge on the boards.

Lowers paced Rose-Hulman with 16 and Moore followed with 13, whle Michael Kelly grabbed six rebounds.

DePauw shot a season-low 35.6 percent from the field including just 23.5 percent in the second half, but the Tigers knocked down 17-of-21 free throws and 14-of-16 in the second half. The Enginners shot just 37 percnet from the floor for the game.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, December 19, when they host Kenyon College at 3 p.m.
