Putnam County Jail

Two people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* Van Elgin Batts, 38, St. Louis, Mo., was booked in at 1 a.m. Monday for resisting law enforcement. He was arrested by Trooper Charlie Boller.

* David Lee McCarty, 44, Bainbridge, was booked in at 10:40 p.m. Monday for domestic battery. He was arrested by Deputy Ronnie Campbell.

Sheriff's Dept.

Several accidents were investigated recently by the Putnam county Sheriff's Department.

* At 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, a pickup truck hit a deer on U.S. 36 near CR 475 East.

Reserve Deputy Don Lewis reported that Virginia M. Daringer, 50, 6000 N. CR 600 East, Bainbridge, was driving west in a 1995 Dodge pickup when an eastbound vehicle hit a deer and knocked the animal in the air. The deer struck her vehicle, damaging the front bumper and fender. The other vehicle did not stop.

Damage was estimated at $750-$1,000.

* At 8:40 a.m. Monday, a 1993 Ford Aerostar went off Ind. 240 at CR 700 East.

Deputy Lewis reported that Matthew Kuchler, 37, 3084 S. CR 200 West, Greencastle, was driving east behind a snow plow that was slowing to make a left turn, but Kuchler did not see the plow's turn signal. He tried to pull into the passing lane and realized the snow plow was turning left, so he ran off the road and hit a utility pole.

The impact broke the pole, but did not knock down the pole or power lines.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

* At 3:58 p.m. Sunday, two vehicles collided on U.S. 40 near CR 550 East.

Deputy Ronnie Campbell reported that Andrew C. Borden, 38, Terre Haute, was driving east in a 1995 Chevrolet minivan when another vehicle pulled off the county road into his lane in front of him and he could not avoid the collision. The other vehicle left the scene.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.

* At 6:13 p.m. Sunday, a truck ran off U.S. 40 near CR 300 East.

Deputy Campbell reported that Clinton L. Ferguson, 25, 18 Woodland Court, Greencastle, was driving west west he ran off the road in his 2002 GMC Sierra pickup and hit an unknown object.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.

* At 10:09 a.m. Saturday, a car slid off Heritage Drive and hit a tree.

Reserve Deputy Mike Downing reported that Joyce F. Greene, 54, Osgood, was driving west in a Chevrolet when she lost control of the vehicle and it slide into a ditch and hit a tree.

Damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

* At 8:07 a.m. Saturday, a car slid off CR 750 East.

Reserve Deputy Joe Tesmer reported that Amber Marie Hallam, 21, Quincy, was driving south in a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt when she hit a slick spot in the road. The car went off the road and hit a ditch, turning onto its side.

* At 4:47 p.m. Friday, a car went off CR 300 East and hit a tree.

Deputy Tesmer reported that Danny E. Donahue, 39, 1658 E. CR 1000 South, Cloverdale, was driving south in a 1988 Mercury Cougar when his tire went off the road. The car ran down a ditch and hit a fence and several trees.

Damage was estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

Greencastle Fire Dept.

The Greencastle Fire Department was dispatched to three addresses recently:

On Tuesday

* At 11:30 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to 500 South Fillmore Road for an active alarm. They were disregarded and returned at 11:39 a.m.

* At 3:16 p.m., crews responded to Delta Tau Delta fraternity, 1 Taylor Place, for a fire alarm. They reset the alarm and returned at 3:31 p.m.

* At 4 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 429 E. Franklin St. for a gas leak. Vectren Gas Company arrived and crews were back on station at 4:25 p.m.
