DePauw men host two games this weekend

Coming off their win in the Tampa Bay Shootout, the DePauw Tigers will be facing two conference adversaries over a three-day period starting Friday.

Friday's match up will feature Tigers prowling both benches, as DePauw will host Sewanee at 8 p.m.

DePauw made an impressive run after the holiday break, capturing the Tampa Bay Shootout title in exciting style. In the first game, freshman Steve Lemasters delivered the victory to the Tigers with a last second tip-in to set up a title game showdown against Mount St. Joseph. In the title game, DePauw had three players post double figures and out rebounded the lions 41-29, including 12 offensive boards in the game.

Brian Oilar led the Tigers with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Mike Moore collected 17 points and 12 assists. Senior Ryan Werntz added 16 points for the Tigers. Werntz, who had struggled before the break, found his stroke and knocked down three from long distance.

For the season, DePauw has amassed a record of 8-2 on the season due in part to strong play from its young players and good leadership from its veteran crew.

Two of the veterans leading the way for the Tigers are Oilar and Stephen Schott. Oilar and Schott are averaging 13 points a game and pulling in eight boards a game. Oilar has also collected 19 offensive rebounds for the Tigers.

For the underclassmen, Moore leads the Tigers in scoring and in assists per contest. He is throwing in 16 points a game and has dished the rock 67 times this season. Lemasters has given the Tigers a lift of the bench, averaging 10 points a game and is shooting 40 percent from behind the arc.

Sophomore Tom Callen leads DePauw in field goal percentage by shooting 62 percent while averaging five points per contest.

The Tigers are posting 72 points a game and records 34 rebounds per game. On the season, the Tigers have been hot from the floor, averaging 47 percent from the floor including 41 percent from the three-point line.

DePauw will have its hands full will Sewanee's Ben Pursell and Bradley Pierson. Pursell and Pierson average 33 points a game. Pursell will be a major presence in the middle as he has racked up 28 offensive rebounds, 17 blocks and 16 steals on the season. Gary Grizzle will be at point for Sewanee and has recorded 56 assists and 18 steals on the season.

Sewanee is coming off a 68-51 win against Huntingdon College in the Hawks New Year's Eve Tournament.

The Tiger will face Oglethorpe in the second half of a double header Sunday.

Oglethorpe has three players averaging double figures on the season.

Craig Jackson and Ahmad Kareem Shahee both are putting up 13 points per game for the Petrels.

The Tigers will need to concentrate on blocking out defensively against the Petrels as Shahee is averaging seven rebounds a game and Joe Kennedy has collected 44 for the season.

Offensively Oglethorpe is averaging 83 points as a team and hauls in 37 rebounds per game. They are shooting 43 percent from the field and 34 from beyond the arc.

DePauw will host Sewanee at 8 p.m. Friday and Oglethorpe at 2 p.m. Sunday. Both games will be carried live on 91.5 WGRE.
