Greencastle captures middle school county tournament title

Greencastle utilized strong second half defensive performances to secure both championships in the Putnam County middle school basketball tournament Wednesday evening. In the 7th grade game, the Tiger Cubs led by a slim 27-25 margin after the third quarter, but were able to hold North Putnam scoreless over the final six minutes to emerge with a 31-25 victory.

Greencastle was led in scoring by Nick Gilliam and Hayden Stuckwisch with eight points each. North Putnam's Garth Wishert led all scorers with 15.

Greencastle's 8th grade Putnam County championship team includes coaches Jarrod Duff and Shane Huber, cheerleaders Kaileigh Duell, Cheyenne Fauvergue, Kimberlyn Fenwick, Paige Pickens, Hannah Wainman, Ashtin Ford, Rachel Coget, Hannah Dixon, Brooklyn Edgar, Brittany Espinosa, Hailie Trammell, and Darian Ray, and players Brad Boyers, Trevor Huber, Andy Bell, Matt Hendrich, Brad Haussin, Kaden Faust, A.J. Gerard, Nolan Sappenfield, Dustin Law, Mitchell Ball, Hunter Mitchell, Hank Spencer, Nate Secrest, Ryan Stevens, Ryan Battin, Jesse Tesmer, Michael Phillips and Nick Hutcheson

The Cubs trailed Cloverdale, 19-16, at the half in the 8th grade game, but allowed the Clovers only eight points in the second half and eventually pulled away for a 43-27 win. Greencastle's Nick Hutcheson netted a game-high 15 points. Cloverdale was paced by Charles Strunk with 12.
