Culinary arts students at Area 30 in Greencastle prepare for an upcoming course on candy making.

Putnam County Extension Homemakers and students at Area 30 Career Center will team up on Wednesday, Feb. 6 to learn information and share tips about candy making techniques.

Putnam County Extension Educator Jackie Baumann and culinary arts instructor Mary Anne Birt of Area 30 Career Center invite anyone interested in learning more about making a variety of candies to attend a special joint program they are calling Candy Making 101, just in time for Valentine's Day.

Several well known local candy makers, including Linda Dunbar, Norma Hurst and Dorothy Wells, will be demonstrating and sharing tips about candy making along with Baumann, Birt and three of Birt's culinary arts students. Those attending the class will learn about making hazelnut brittle, rock candy, fudge, truffles, fondant, formed chocolate and chocolate dipped candies, and more.

Thursa Evens, who recently won a national culinary award and just retired from Almost Home Restaurant, will also share her expertise and tips through handouts that will be provided. The program will be presented in the Culinary Arts Department at Area 30 Career Center (just east of Wal-mart).

The class will begin at 12:30 p.m. on the second level of the building. The public is welcome but reservations are required, and a fee of $2.50 will be charged to cover some of the expenses of the class.

Those attending will get to taste as well as take home some samples from the class. For more information or to register for the class, stop in the Putnam County Office of the Purdue Extension Service at 209 W. Liberty St. in Greencastle, or call 653-8411.
