Sheriff's Dept.

Several accidents were investigated recently by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

* At 11:25 a.m. Friday, a car slid on ice and left the roadway on U.S. 231 at East Tall Oak Lane.

Deputy Dan Wallace reported that Kenny Vo, Indianapolis, was driving a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder and hit a slick patch, went off the road and struck a telephone box.

Damage was estimated at $10,000-25,000.

* At 11:58 a.m. Friday, a car hit a slick spot in the road on CR 125 South and CR 400 North.

Deputy Don Lewis reported that Matthew P. Hawthorne, Greencastle, was driving a 1995 Oldsmobile Achieva when he hit an icy spot on the road. The vehicle spun out of control and hit a mailbox.

Damage was estimated at $750-1,000.

* At 1:05 p.m. Friday, a car slid on ice-covered roads at U.S. 40 at CR 850 East.

Deputy Don Pettit reported that Bret Pafford, Bloomington, was eastbound when the car hit an icy patch and veered off the road, rolling over on its top.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-2,500.

* At 5:53 p.m. Friday, a car slid off the road on U.S. 40 at CR 600 West. Deputy Joe Tesmer reported that Lorie Caruso, Brazil, was eastbound in a 2004 GMC Envoy when she hit an icy spot in the road, causing the vehicle to slide off into a culvert.

Damage was estimated at $5,000-10,000.

* At 1:26 a.m. Saturday, a car went off the road and hit some trees as U.S. 231 and CR 850 North.

Reserve Deputy Denna DeLaCruz reported that Amanda Gubser, Greencastle, was southbound and fell asleep at the wheel, causing her 2001 Ford Escort to leave the roadway and hit some trees. She was taken to Putnam County Hospital for treatment.

Damage was estimated at $2,500-5,000.

* At 7:24 p.m. Saturday, a car hit a deer on Manhattan Road.

Reserve Deputy DeLaCruz reported that Brandon S. McKee, Reelsville, was westbound when a deer ran into the roadway and struck her vehicle.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-2,500.

* At 8:30 p.m. Sunday, a car slid off the road due to rainy conditions.

The deputy reported that Curtiss McKinney, Reelsville, was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer into a curve. He slid off the curve and hit a tree. There were no injuries.

Damage was estimated at $1,000-2,500.

Putnam County Jail

Two people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently.

* Steven Wayne Owen, 57, Greencastle, was booked in at 2:38 p.m. Monday for public intoxication. He was arrested by Greencastle Officer Charles Inman.

* Laura B. Hurst, 27, Cloverdale, was booked in at 10:45 a.m. Monday for driving while suspended or revoked. She was booked in by Greencastle Officer Ed Wilson.

Greencastle Fire Dept.

Five runs were handled Monday by Greencastle firefighters.

* At 9:20 a.m., firefighters provided a medical assist with Operation Life at 400 Illinois St. They returned at 10:18 a.m.

* At 10:51 a.m., firefighters responded to a fatal auto accident on CR 600 South. They returned at 11:27 a.m.

* At 2:03 p.m., firefighters responded to an alarm at 208 E Olive St. Nothing was found and they returned at 2:18 a.m.

* At 6:17 p.m., firefighters responded to an alarm activated by cooking at 109 W. Hanna St. They returned at 6:27 p.m.

* At 7:24 p.m., firefighters responded to an alarm activated by cooking at 208 E Olive St. They returned at 7:38 p.m.
