The Greencastle boys' freshman basketball team captured the Putnam County championship by defeating North Putnam 40-32 Saturday.

Greencastle found its way into the finals after defeating Cloverdale 36-22 in the opening game.

In the opening game, a slow start by both teams led to a 12-12 tie at the half. Greencastle then outscored the Clovers 24-10 in the second half to pull away for the win. Tyler Lewis and Kyle Parker led the Tiger Cubs with 12 points each. Kole Schroer and Seth Jonte both had 6 for Cloverdale.

In the second game, Greencastle led 11-8 at the end of one thanks to a strong inside game from J.T. Hennette and Kyle Parker. Solid team defense held North Putnam to three points in the second quarter and the Tiger Cubs upped the lead to seven, 18-11 at the half. Coming out strong in the third quarter the Cougars out-scored the Tiger Cubs 13-6 and a shot at the buzzer tied the game at 24 going into the final stanza.

Greencastle hit 14 shots from the charity stripe in the final quarter. The lone field goal for Greencastle in the fourth was a lay-up off a steal by Tyler Lewis. Balanced scoring, strong defense, and rebounding were the keys to the victory, according to Greencastle coach Doug Hudson. Keegan Remsburg and Tyler Lewis led the Tiger Cubs with 10 each while Payne Stewart led North Putnam with 14 points.

For Greencastle, the wins bring its record to 12-5 on the season.
