Girls' basketball sectional begins tonight

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Two Putnam County girls' basketball teams will begin sectional play tonight. The other two will begin tomorrow at 6 p.m., when they face one another.

At 7 p.m. tonight, Greencastle (11-9, 4-2 WCC) will face off with South Vermillion (5-15, 2-4 WIC) in game one of the Brown County Class 3A Sectional.

Greencastle is 8-3 since the middle of December and is coming off a second-place tie in the West Central Conference. South Vermillion has won just one game since the beginning of December and finished fifth in the Western Indiana Conference.

The two programs have not met since 2001, when the Wildcats defeated the Tiger Cubs 43-35 in sectional. Against common foes, Greencastle is 7-4, while South Vermillion is 0-9.

The winner will face Brown County in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday.

At 7:30 p.m. tonight, North Putnam (7-13, 4-2 WCC) will face Speedway (14-5, 5-1 WCC) in game two of the Cascade Class 2A Sectional.

The Cougars have had an up-and-down season, beginning the season 0-7 before winning four in a row. The second half of the year has been one of great improvement for North Putnam, as its second-place tie in the West Central Conference will attest. The Sparkplugs have been steady most of the season and captured the WCC crown with wins over the Cougars and Cloverdale last week.

Speedway defeated the Cougars 52-36 last Tuesday.

The winner of this game will face the winner of game one between Cascade (6-14, 2-4 WCC) and Tri-West (11-9, 2-5 Sagamore) at 6 p.m. Friday.

Cloverdale and South Putnam will begin their tournament at 6 p.m. tomorrow when they face off in game three of the Cascade sectional.
