One critical after crash

Friday, February 22, 2008

A Putnam County man is in critical condition following an early Friday accident on U.S. 40 east of Manhattan Road.

Drew Christy, Fillmore, underwent emergency surgery at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and remains in the neurocritical care unit as of Friday night.

Sgt. Tom Helmer of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department reports that Christy was the lone occupant of a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder that went off the highway some time around 1:15 a.m.

Helmer said a family member told him that Christy had just finished a semester at Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute and was driving home to Fillmore early Friday.

Helmer reported the vehicle hit black ice and went off the road about 3,000 feet east of Manhattan Road. The Nissan slid across the shoulder and a ditch and hit a large tree on the south side of the road. The impact occurred in the driver's side door, resulting in serious head and chest injuries to Christy, who was trapped in the vehicle.

A passing motorist reported the accident, Helmer said. No one witnessed the accident, but evidence shows there was a major impact with the tree.

A Reelsville firefighter was the first person on the scene, and he found Christy trapped and unresponsive. Washington Township and Greencastle firefighters extricated Christy from the vehicle. He was taken to Putnam County Hospital via Operation Life ambulance, and later transported via ambulance to Methodist Hospital. Helmer said due to the poor weather conditions, it was not possible to transport Christy via medical helicopter.
