FORT WAYNE -- Former North Putnam and Greencastle standout Toni Burney recently completed her junior season at the University of Saint Francis with an all-conference selection.

Burney was USF's only first-team all-Mid-Central Conference selection. Other Lady Cougars honored included Marie Kaufmann (second team) and Jamika Banks (all-newcomer team).

Greencastle graduate Toni Burney made all-Mid-Central Conference this season playing for the Universtiy of Saint Francis.

In her second season in Fort Wayne, Burney finished second in the MCC in assists with 4.3 per game and a total of 134. The guard also finished 28th in the NAIA in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.654) and 38th in assists per game.

She was also third in the conference in steals with 2.1 per game and 64 overall.

Burney was also 16th in the league at 11.1 points per game. In over 28 minutes per game, she shot 47 percent from the field.

Burney led or tied for the lead in scoring for USF eight times. She scored in double figure 18 times. Her career high came Dec. 29, when she scored 23 points at No. 16 Shawnee State.

In two seasons at Saint Francis, Burney has scored in 548 points.

USF would have completed its season at 26-5 if not for a self-reported violation of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics eligibility rules. According to the USF website, "NAIA determined that USF, after self-reporting use of one of its players previously believed to be eligible, must forfeit 19 games."

For this reason, USF officially completed its season at 7-24 with a 70-51 loss to Taylor in the MCC tournament.

None of this, however, changed Burney's accomplishments throughout the season.

Burney played on North Putnam's IHSAA Final Four teams in her freshman and sophomore seasons in high school. She moved the Greencastle and played for the Tiger Cubs her junior year, but missed her senior season with a knee injury.
