Percy L. Julian Jr.

Percy L. Julian Jr., 67, son of the late Percy L. Julian Sr., died Feb. 24 in Madison, Wisc. after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage.

Born in Chicago, he went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1962. He resided in Madison since entering the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he earned his J.D. in 1966. In the 1970s, the NAACP appointed Julian to serve as the lead counsel in the Springfield, Ill. school desegregation litigation. He was also their lead counsel in a large employment class action against the Pillsbury Company. He continued to serve on their board until his death.

In 1989, Julian became a training consultant to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In 2004, until his death, he taught housing discrimination law at the National Fair Housing Academy in Washington, D.C. and served a term as president of the First Amendment Lawyers Association.

During the 1980s, Julian taught photography when he served as a visiting professor in Fine Arts at DePauw University, where his father and all five of his father's siblings had obtained their college degree. He also taught photography at the University of Wisconsin Extension.

A private funeral was held on Feb. 29 and a memorial service on March 7. Both were held in Madison.

Julian was buried at Elmlawn Cemetery in Elmhurst, Ill.

Survivors include his wife, Jan Blackmon, Madison; a daughter, Dr. Katherine Julian and husband William Kwong, San Francisco; a sister, Faith Julian, Oak Park, Ill.; a brother, Leon Ellis, Delray Beach, Fla.; two stepsons: Scott Blackmon and Kevin Blackmon; six grandchildren and many cousins and friends.
