Greencastle softball downs Terre Haute South

TERRE HAUTE -- As reported in Wednesday's BannerGraphic, the Greencastle softball team picked up a big win Monday, defeating Terre Haute South 7-3. The junior varsity also got into the act, defeating the Braves 7-2.

Coach Dave Keller was pleased with his team, noting that their biggest strength continues to be defense and pitching.

"(It's a) huge win for the program beating a big 4A school," Keller said. "This game can do nothing but build our confidence for future games. Once again, we made some very critical defensive plays and our pitching was outstanding.

"We are beginning to play together very well and if a mistake is made, especially on defense, the rest of the team rallies behind that individual and makes plays," he continued.

Mallory Miller pitched a complete game for the Tiger Cubs (4-1, 2-0 WCC), collecting five strikeouts while allowing just two runs on six hits and two walks. Miller is now 2-0.

Keller was also pleased because his team's offense really took care of business Monday as well.

"We had 12 hits last night which was also encouraging since it is the most hits we've had in a game to this point," Keller said. "We also had some timely hits which we haven't been able to get a lot of this year, so that was a plus for us."

Hannah Spencer was 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple. Miller was 3-for-4 with a double. Samantha Sillery was 2-for-3, while Cassie Alspaugh, Briana Baker, Veronica Sawyer and Kayla Nobles each picked up one hit.

Most of all, though, the coach is pleased with the way his team performs as just that -- a team.

"We play really well as a team because everyone realizes the importance of playing together and the team concept," Keller said. "Sure, an individual may stand out here and there at times but they are always complimenting their teammates and encouraging them and that's what I'm most proud of."

GHS still fields a young team that is learning how to win, but at 4-1, Keller is very pleased with the strides his squad is making.

"We are starting to feel confidence with each game and we now go into each game with a purpose and feel we can play with anyone," Keller said. "With a young team, we all are aware that there will be bumps in the road this year and games we lose, but if we continue to learn from those games we will continue to get better. We are pleased as a team, but we are certainly not content because we have bigger goals."

In the JV game, Kayla Downing was the winning pitcher, while Brooke Lewis was 2-for-2 with a triple.
