GHS softball falls to Wildcats in extra innings

Thursday, April 10, 2008

CLINTON -- The Greencastle girls' softball squad fell to South Vermillion in 10 innings, 3-2 Tuesday night.

Head coach Dave Keller cited the Tiger Cubs inability to string together hits as a factor in the loss.

Samantha Sillery led the Tiger Cubs going 2-for-4 in the game with Hannah Spencer, Cassie Alspaugh, Briana Baker and Becca Seahorn all adding hits in the game.

Baker pitched a complete game for GHS, throwing for five strikeouts, seven hits and zero walks in the contest.

"(It was a) tough loss but I told them I'd rather lose to them now than in the sectionals so we got this one out of the way," Keller said. "South Vermillion is a good team and is very well coached and we played them toe to toe."

Greencastle is on an extended road trip this week, but Keller believes that the toughness of their opponents will do nothing but make the team better.

"We'll bounce back and hopefully play a good game against Crawfordsville. This is a tough week for the team with three long road trips, but it will make us better when we get back in the conference on Monday. This week will make us stronger," Keller commented.

In junior varsity action, Greencastle dealt the Wildcats an 11-5 loss with Brooke Lewis and Tennille Burgeson recording two hits each. Kayla Downing threw a complete game.

Greencastle travels to Crawfordsville Friday for a 6:30 p.m. start.
