Assessor says tax bills will be delayed

Putnam County is on a long list of Hoosier counties that have yet to submit their property tax assessments to the state.

This means that homeowners will not receive their bills until much later than expected -- and the fallout doesn't stop there.

It also causes schools and other tax-supported agencies to seek out temporary funding. The most recent example occurred recently at the South Putnam School Board meeting.

Putnam County Assessor Wanda O'Neal said, "The state ordered back years to be compliant. We just became compliant about three weeks ago."

At this time, she says she has no idea when the county will be able to submit the assessments.

However, she said there will be no repercussions for homeowners since it is not their fault.

The Associated Press reported otherwise. That story appears on page 3 of today's BannerGraphic.

The news agency reported that in Marion County, the delay will cost taxpayers between $30 million and $50 million. Hendricks County is nine months late in submitting the required information.

  • Every year this happens. I agree with bondsman. Whose fault is this? Will we see in the future that of assessor's office will need additional help. Maybe if they all stayed in their offices and did their jobs, this would not continue to happen over and over and over and over and over. Get my drift? It's time ladies and gentlemen to get out and vote this year. Take these people out of office, all of them, cousines, aunts and so on. Everyone is related to everyone there. Is this the only way you can get a job in the courthouse. VOTE THEM ALL OUT!

  • I have found plenty of reasons to be unhappy with the Assessor's office and the Real Estate taxation portion of that office over the last few years.

    However, I did some digging around and I am confident that this problem is one caused by the State and NOT by our local Assessor's office.

    The problem is the Dept of Local Gov. Finance - it needs to be abolished!

  • 30 to 50 million in marion county alone???? that is rediculous... all they (politicians) do is complain about spending!! that is to make us happy...but in reality all they do is keep spending and wasting money, our money. it is so easy to spend everyone elses money.

    we all are so sick of the lifestyle they are living at our expense and there is nothing we can do about it. they always have an excuse on why they are late or why they need this or that, it never ends and never will.
