Greencastle golf gets big win over Knights

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Greencastle's boys' golf team strolled into Forest Park and defeated Northview 154-156 as they gear up for the Putnam County golf match on Thursday.

"This was a day we desperately needed," head coach Donovan Wheeler said. "This was one of those days when we started to show some of the ability we have within ourselves to fight for scores rather than give up when the swing's not clicking."

Eric Davis was medalist for the round, shooting a 36. Davis' 36 was two shots better than last year's sectional medalist Kade Baker on his home course, a good sign for the Tiger Cubs.

"Except for a few hiccups, Eric has been the stead leader we've needed," GHS head coach Donovan Wheeler said. "He re-tooled his grip and made a few other changes over the weekend and they seemed to have paid off."

Davis told his coach that even the shots that he misplayed were more playable than in weeks past.

Davis was followed by Luke Crimmins Jacob Collins who both shot a 39. Wade Huber shot a 40 for the Tiger Cubs and Nick Pritchard came in with a 42. Tyler Hopkins rounded out the varsity scoring with a 46. Freshman Jim Wheeler missed the match due to illness.

"The other four boys are all finally being more patient with their games and their ability to stay more in the moment has made them more viable as competitors," Wheeler commented.

"Some will argue that we benefited because the course was flat, but I would point out that our team and several other good teams have come out her in the past and put up some bad numbers. You still have to play the game to make the scores and these boys did just that. I've very proud of them right now," Wheeler commented.

The Tiger Cubs boast an impressive record this season, but bad rounds, critical comments and meltdowns have pockmarked the year but Wheeler possibly sees a light at the end of the tunnel. He acknowledged that it's been a tough season for his squad and his belief in his team is stronger than ever.

"These boys have been through the wringer," Wheeler commented. "Between their performances and my sometimes blunt criticism, golf hasn't been all that much fun. But they are great people and I really think intangibles such as those things, you can never count out.

"If any group can rally from a rough start, these boys can," Wheeler expressed.

The junior varsity lost 163-213. Seth Miller led the way with a 48.
