Newby's 38 leads Eagles to 40-shot victory at home

Thursday, May 15, 2008

BRAZIL -- Tyler Newby fired a 38 to lead South Putnam to a 180-220 victory over Riverton Parke Monday.

Considering some sloppy playing conditions, Coach Scott Ricke was pleased with the senior's two-over performance.

"Tyler Newby played great. In conditions that were very wet and muddy, a good score is hard to come by, so a 38 is pretty solid," Ricke said.

Tyler Shoffner was next for South with a 45, followed by a 47 from Dylan Gilbert. Michael Nichols finished the scoring with a 50.

Damon Robinson also had a 46 for the Eagles and Tyler Cox shot a 63.

In a season that has been a work-in-progress, Ricke sees definite signs of improvement from his golfers. He is now looking for their strides to show up in their match scores.

"While we didn't play great, we played OK. How we're approaching the course is better, but our scores aren't yet reflecting that," Ricke said. "With some more work, hopefully we can get a few of these scores down some."

South visits Clay City at 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
