Cloverdale's Young advances to state; GHS and NP athletes falter at regional

BLOOMINGTON -- Cloverdale boys' track had only one athlete at the Bloomington North Track Regional to respresent the school and he didn't disappoint. CHS senior Raine Young punched his ticket to the state championship by jumping 21-02 to finish second in the long jump.

Bloomington seems to have become a home away from home for Young, who will have competed in the town for sectional, regional and now state.

At the Lafayette Jeff Track Regional, athletes from Greencastle and North Putnam saw their seasons come to an end Thursday night.

For Greencastle, Jordan Hickam was their highest finisher with a jump of 20-09 in the long jump. Ben Wilson placed ninth in the 1,600 meter after running a time of 4:37.04 and finished 15th in the 800 meter with a time of 2:17.17.

The 400-meter relay team of Ashton Marshall, Steven Miller, Ryan Payne and Trevor Teal finished in 13th place on the night. Marshall failed to advance in the 200 meter after posting a time of 23.45 in the prelims.

North Putnam's lone athlete at regional was Jerrett Ban, but it was a tough night for the Cougar runner. Ban was unable to advance out of the 100-meter prelims after clocking a time of 11.46 and scratched all three attempts in the long jump.

Young will compete at the Indiana University Outdoor Track on May 31. The long jump is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Admission for the state finals is $7.
