Museum hosting exhibit

Monday, June 2, 2008

The Putnam County Museum, in partnership with the Putnam County Spinners and Weavers Guild, will host "Sheep to Shawl" at the museum on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

David Greenburg, winner of sheep-shearing awards in Indiana and Illinois, will talk about sheep, wool, and shearing. He will also shear a sheep at the museum.

After the shearing session, the Putnam County Spinners and Weavers Guild will be set up at four demonstration stations. One will deal with carding the sheared wool, which is basically the brushing of the washed wool. The second station will demonstrate the dying of the wool fibers and the final two stations will show the spinning and weaving of the wool.

A finished shawl will be part of the Putnam County Museum's Silent Auction during its Annual Gala Luncheon and Membership Meeting on Aug. 2. The proceeds made from the item will go to benefit the Putnam County Museum.

The Putnam County Spinners and Weavers Guild are composed of residents from the county who educate, demonstrate, and preserve the art of dying, spinning and weaving. In addition to the Sheep to Shawl program, they also have some of their works of art as well as tools of the trade displayed in our community-curated exhibit space. The exhibit will be up until July and is open to the entire public.

There will be refreshments provided at the event, and the program is free to the public.
