'Get Buggy!' at the Putnam County Library

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Children, teens, adults--readers of all ages--will have the opportunity to learn about drawing and insects on Thursday, June 5, 2 p.m., at the Putnam County Public Library.

The program, "Let's Get Buggy!" will combine the expert knowledge of biologist Dr. Jay Hosler who is also a very talented graphic artist. Participants will get the opportunity to draw and learn about insects. This program kicks off the PCPL's Summer Reading Program.

Hosler, the 2007-08 Distinguished Visiting Associate Professor of Biology at DePauw University, and Assistant Professor of Biology at Juniata College, is the creator of award-winning comic books on science.

"Hosler published his first comic strip as a sophomore at DePauw University, where he eventually found a spot as a cartoonist on the campus newspaper," reports Pennsylvania's Altoona Mirror.

"Best known for giving voice to honey bees and follicle mites, Hosler is hoping to help make sense of science by appealing to the senses of young readers--and by showing American audiences that comics as a teaching tool deserve some respect."

Hosler has garnered national recognition for his work as a cartoonist and has published two graphic novels, "Clan Apis" and "The Sandwalk Adventures." His books have been featured on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" as well as in The New York Times, Chronicle of Higher Education and Science.

There will be no story time at 3:30 p.m. for school age children on June 5.
