Letter to the Editor

Candidate thankful for support despite loss

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

To the Editor:

Now that the dust from the recent primary election has settled, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for covering my campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

Although I ultimately did not prevail, it was nonetheless a privilege for Laura and I to travel this great state, hear from hard-working Hoosiers and make new friends in every community.

What a historic and memorable election it was! As a first-time candidate, I really had no idea what to expect from the process of running for office, but I can tell you that the process far exceeded our expectations in terms of the amount of fun we had and the level of excitement surrounding the campaign.

We worked hard to get our message out in many different ways, but we never could have accomplished all that we did without the media. Clearly, you had no shortage of distractions from the presidential primary campaigns, and I want to make sure you understand how grateful I am for the job that you do and the responsibility you have to inform the public.

Prior to this experience, I read the newspaper, listened to the radio and watched the evening news as a mere observer of events. I now know what it feels like to actually be a current event.

Again, thank you for the critical role you play in the political process and for serving as a watchdog to ensure that Hoosiers can trust their government and the public officials they elect to represent them.

Yours sincerely,

Jim Schellinger
