Driver accused of hitting pedestrians turns himself in

CLOVERDALE -- A Putnam County man accused of fleeing the scene of an accident where two pedestrians were hit on Wednesday has surrendered to police.

Eighteen-year-old Nicholas G. Rogers, of Cloverdale, turned himself in to authorities Friday evening and is being held in the Putnam County Jail on a charge of fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury.

Cloverdale Police Officer Charlie Hallam told the Banner Graphic Friday that he believes more charges could be filed against Rogers, depending on what the investigation turns up.

"We're still investigating a lot of different things," he said.

Right now, investigators are trying to determine if Rogers intentionally struck down 17-year-old Brett Elwood and 19-year-old Wade Davis on Wednesday as they stood in the street in the Stardust Hills subdivision in Cloverdale.

A witness to the crash said he heard the 1996 Chevrolet Corsica's engine revving before it hit the two young men and left the scene. Officers found the car a short time later and observed a broken windshield and other damage.

The two victims identified Rogers as the driver of the car that struck them, but police were not able to locate the young driver immediately following the crash.

Elwood was Lifelined from the scene to Methodist Hospital for head and leg injuries and Davis was taken to Putnam County Hospital for treatment.

On Friday, Hallam said he believed Davis had been released from the hospital and that Elwood underwent surgery and was improving.

The prosecutor could receive the police department's report on Monday.

"Based on the way the investigation is going right now, we could know more on Monday as far as additional charges," he said.

  • he's not a dumb kid nor is he the brightest, he jus seems to be one of those kids that's always in the wrong place at the wrong time and this one was jus really bad. I'm glad for the boys to be alright but i'm also respectful of nick for doing the right thing and turning himself in.

  • His motive doesn't really matter. All he has to do is hire an attorney and plead it out just like Cody Wright did.........say.......resisting law enforcement. My goodness, this boy probably won't serve jail time because he didn't kill anyone like Cody did.

    Doing the right thing would have consisted of Nick hanging around at the time of the accident to explain himself not fleeing the scene and turning himself in later.

    By the way, it is spelled "just" not "jus"

  • He did do the right thing by turning himself in. He did not do the right thing by fleeing at the time of the incident. It will be interesting to learn what really was behind this incident.
