United Way still seeking help, ideas for 'Day of Caring'

Volunteers and projects are still needed for The United Way of Putnam County's Day of Caring on Sept. 5.

The annual event brings volunteers together to celebrate the spirit of giving through service by providing a day of volunteer opportunities that impact the entire community.

Anyone who has a project they need help with can contact the United Way. First priority will be given to any projects for United Way agencies, but the agency will be happy to look at projects for individuals or businesses that are not related to the organization.

Projects can include helping to build structures, cleaning up areas, painting, lawn care projects or just about anything that needs done.

Anyone can participate as a volunteer. Businesses, employee groups from local corporations, church and youth groups, as well as civic and philanthropic groups are welcome to join the event.

"No matter what your interest or skills, there is an opportunity for you to get involved. Projects may include painting a room, cleaning out a flowerbed or sorting canned food," said Putnam County United Way Director David English.

The day begins with volunteers gathering at the Walden Inn and Conference Center at 8 a.m. for the Annual United Way of Putnam County Kick-Off Breakfast. DePauw University's new President Dr. Brian Casey will be the featured speaker at the event.

"Day of Caring gives volunteers a firsthand look at services provided by local organizations and how they impact people's lives. It also showcases the communities volunteer efforts and promotes the spirit of caring," said English.

Following the hour-long breakfast, volunteers will report to their work groups around 9 a.m.

"This is an opportunity for many local organizations to get help with much needed volunteer assistance," said English.
