Wade named coach at Cloverdale

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Cloverdale Community Schools officials announced the hiring of a new girls' basketball coach at the school board meeting Monday evening.

James Wade, former boys' junior varsity basketball coach, has taken over the role as head girls' basketball coach. Wade is from Cloverdale and also a math teacher at the high school.

"We hoped to fill the job internally," said Superintendent Carrie Milner. "Mr. Wade is someone the girls all know and respond to."

This appointment comes on the heels of speculation regarding the reappointment of former coach Bruce Cook.

At last months meeting, around 30 supporters packed the room during the school board hearing in hopes of getting Cook hired back for an additional year.

Following Monday's meeting, Tony Hacker commented that it was too bad they couldn't get 30 people out to support their new coach like last month.

With his appointment as girl's head coach, Wade will step down from his role as boys' junior varsity basketball coach.

"At this time we have not filled that position," Milner said. "We're still trying to get teachers hired right now."

During the meeting, the board also heard from Dan Sulkoske regarding the facilities project.

"The bleachers will be done by the end of the week," said Sulkoske. "The football field is all done except for the 30-second clock. They are scrambling to get that done for this week's jamboree."

The board approved a motion for the gym floor in the elementary to get fixed following a long discussion between Sulkoske and Milner. The motion approved is contingent upon Milner's final approval once she has been given the numbers by the contractors.

Hacker was a large proponent of the gym floor being fixed. He was the first to step up and say how dire the condition of the floor is in.

What Sulkoske presented to the board was a contract extension to build a storage room on the administration building as well as repairing the floor in the elementary. The additional cost would be around $16,000.

In other business Rob Schroer reported that the bus inspection was very successful. The only thing found was a pin-hole in one of the exhaust pipes. Milner stated that Cloverdale has one of the best school lunch prices in the county at $2.10 and that there were 103 Kindergarteners registered this year thus far.

The Cloverdale School Board meets the second Monday of every month.

  • Whoop de doo. Another Cloverdale sports story.

We all know the world would end if there weren't any sports to talk about at Cloverdale. I'm thrilled that the bleachers will be done in time for football season. Too bad some of that money couldn't be appropriated to the MUSIC DEPARTMENT! They could use a lot of new things too. Thank heavens Ms. Ward wrote such a wonderful article last week about the hard work the band is doing!

  • I disagree. I dont think it should be either or on sports or arts and I dont think kids benefit more from one then the other. Kids are forced to choose between the two and that is unfair. It is usually the band director that wont allow athletes in the program.

To remain on topic tho, Mr Wade we support you and wish you luck on season. Your absence in boys program will be noticed.

  • A few things in the board meeting seems to stand out. First,Mrs.Miller saying that w/just a couple days till school, she is still hiring teachers.Any good ones left still unemployed?Seems like a last minute clean-up and priorities not attended to.I understand that some that applied for the girls coaching spot were science teachers, yet they hired one of the in house gang. While needing science teachers? Hmmm. Another thing, she talks of her corp.having great meals and priced better than others. Their cost is very comparable to the other schools locally. That "great healthy lunch" thought is hughly laughable. I invite all to check out the menu for the first 3-4 weeks of the year."Healthy" french fries almost everyday.Does 12 out of the first 16 days w/fries sound healthy to you? I suggest as parents you see what they are feeding your kids and talk to Dr. Milner about those "healthy meals" And the cafeteria operator claims to have a,"wellness program?" Where is the oversight? The new security system? Where would ya start on that one........
