Monday, August 18, 2008

The Putnam County Museum announces the arrival of John J. Baughman's book, "Our Past, Their Present: Historical Essays on Putnam County, Indiana" detailing the history of Putnam County.

Baughman received his bachelor's degree in history from DePauw University and his Ph.D. in European history from the University of Michigan. He taught at DePauw University for 37 years and retired in 1990.

He has published widely on Putnam County history and served as a Putnam County Historian.

The book is a compilation of essays written by Baughman during the 1990s for Greencastle Monthly. Revised for the hardcover edition, the book includes many historical photographs, most published for the first time, and an index.

Topics vary from the county's original beginnings, pioneer residents, and "ghost" communities to more recent memorable events and individuals.

The book was designed and edited by the staff and volunteers of the Putnam County Museum, and published thanks in part to the support of DePauw University.

The price for the book is $23.95 for members of the museum, and $29.95 for non-members. The book can be purchased at the museum's gift shop. The museum will also accept orders over the phone or email, and shipping can be provided for an additional cost.
