NEW MARKET -- The North Putnam Cougars football team, currently ranked 9th in the Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 2A poll, traveled to New Market Friday night to play the always tough, Southmont Mounties.

Scott Hunt

The Cougars completely dominated play on both sides of the ball, and on special teams, soundly defeating the Mounties in their first game in their new stadium, 61-7.

The Cougars drove down the field on their first possession, ending with Griffen Dahlstrom scoring the first of his three touchdowns for the evening on a nine--yard run.

Southmont responded by running the kickoff back 95 yards to score their only points of the game.

On the next play of the game, North Putnam's Jerrett Ban then returned the kick-off 93 yards to give the Cougars a 14-7 lead.

After the Cougars stopped Southmont's next drive, Kyle Alcorn returned the Mounties' punt 49 yards to the 10 yard line. On the first play of North Putnam's possession, Scott Hunt ran the ball in for a 10-yard touchdown, and a 21-7 lead for the visitors.

Finally, with 0:00 showing on the clock, the Cougars scored again, this time a 29-yard pass play from Hunt to Tyler Osborn, giving North Putnam a 28-7 going into the second quarter.

After Dahlstrom scored again on a 34-yard run with 10:21 left in the half, giving the Cougars a 35-7 lead, the Cougars' defense was the star of the second quarter.

They stopped Southmont on three different possessions in three different ways.

North Putnam forced the Mounties to punt after three plays on the first series, Cougar Zach Wood forced and recovered a fumble on the second series, and Kyle Adams and Seth Vondersaar sacked the Southmont quarterback on successive plays to end the home team's final series before halftime.

The Cougars opened the third quarter where they left off in the first half. Seth Vondersaar blocked a Southmont punt, grabbed the ball, and ran 12 yards for another North Putnam touchdown with 10:05 showing on the clock, giving the Cougars a 42-7 lead.

On the next Mounties series, Caleb Vondersaar intercepted a Southmont pass, then Dahlstrom scored his third touchdown of the evening, this time on a 76-yard run, giving the Cougars a 49-7 lead.

With his team in total control of the game, North Putnam head coach Greg Barrett then began substituting his starters.

In the final period, freshman quarterback Kolten Everts broke away for a 43-yard touchdown run with 7:59 left in the game, and on Southmont's next play from scrimmage, Travis Franklin intercepted a Mounties pass and returned it 20 yards for the final points in game for the Cougars, and the 61-7 final score.

For the second week in a row, it was another great team win for North Putnam, as the offense, defense, and special teams all contributed big plays though out the game to completely dominate the Mounties.

"It was a great win for our team tonight," Coach Greg Barrett said following the game.

"Everybody played hard and everybody contributed to this win tonight. Success comes from that," added Barrett.

Dahlstrom gained 163 yards on 10 carries to lead the Cougars in rushing. Hunt followed with 16 yards on 4 carries, Everts had 43 on one carry, Franklin had 27 yards on two runs, and Rob Ford ran for 17 yards on two carries, Ban had 15 yards on two runs, Shawn Diebold ran for 14 yards on five carries, and Seth Vondersaar had 12 yards on one blocked punt return.

As a team, North Putnam gained 327 rushing yards compared to Southmont's 100 yards on the ground.

The Cougars were 4-for-6 through the air for 58 yards. Quarterback Scott Hunt hit Osborn with one pass for 29 yards, Darr Boruff Diebold and Caleb Vondersaar each caught passes of 13 yards each. Everts hit Franklin with a three-yard pass.

North Putnam passed for 58 yards compared to Southmont's 116 yards.

Defensively, the Cougars were led by Zach Wood with 10 tackles, followed by Hank Spencer with eight, and Ethan Stephenson had six tackles.
