Courthouse roof repairs to wait

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Putnam County Commissioners Gene Beck, Kristina Warren and Jim Baird tabled approving bids for work on the courthouse roof until their next meeting on Sept. 15.

"I want at least four or five days to digest this stuff before okaying it," said Baird.

The bids are for repairs to the courthouse roof and other damaged areas. Four contractors will be used for the project, which includes electrical, roofing, metals and carpentry.

Cost for the work will be $281,419. Pyramid Engineering, which will oversee the project, suggested the commissioners consider another $20,000 might be necessary due to what they may find once the roof is removed. That will bring the total cost up to nearly $300,000.

In other business, commissioners approved lowering the speed limit on C.R. 400W from 45 mph to 30 mph. Richard Butz, who lives on the road, requested the change be made at the last commissioners meeting, complaining about excessive speeds in the residential area.

Commissioners approved a maintenance agreement for Buckeye Power Sales to lock in a price of $675 for a three-year term. The agreement is to provide preventative maintenance for a generator and transfer switch in the Annex building.

They also tabled approving bids on the boiler in the annex until the next meeting.

They approved the payment of $8,219.62 reimbursement from a Homeland Security Grant that pays half of the salaries for two part-time employees. The money goes into the general fund.

Steve Meno from Fifth Third Bank explained options for saving money by paying off or refinancing a loan for a lower interest rate.

"We think the Feds are going to raise rates further down the road this year," said Meno. "Now is a good time to do something."

Attorney Scott Hoff was asked to investigate any repercussions from making the change before commissioners voted.

The next meeting of the Putnam County Commissioners is at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at the County Annex.
